The main character is six year old little girl named Yara. She is a very cute, kind and sensible little girl. Yara has a very friendly face and personality. She is wearing a pink little outfit, with black ballerina pump style shoes and has two ponytails with yellow ribbons. She has long brown hair, dark eyes and a cute little button nose, with rosy cheeks. It is break time at school, and everyone is excited to open their lunch boxes—except for one little girl sitting all alone. Her name is Leila. She is new to the school and to Yara's class and is very shy. She doesn’t have any food for lunch like the other kids and seems very embarrassed about it. Some kids are staring at her, some of the girls are whispering to each other talking. Yara notices her sadness and feels a tug in her heart. Instead of joining her friends, Yara walks over to Leila with a smile and offers to share her lunch. Yaras friends see this and suddenly feel very bad for not being kinder to Leila. Tito comes over and offers Leila his juice from his lunch box. Keena comes over and shares her fruit with Leila. They became friends and Leila is feeling very happy. Kofi, an 11 yr old boy lives in a remote African jungle village. He has poor vision. He usually doesn't play with other children due to his blurry vision. He is sad and lonely. One day a village elder tells him of a Lion who lives far away but can help kofi's vision. the boy makes the long trek The Lion doctor examines the boy's eyes. He gives him a pair of eyeglasses. the boy returns home wearing his new eyeglasses but takes a long time as he is distracted by all of the new things that he sees, flowers, insects, birds, clouds. Once home he sees his mother clearly for the first time and tells her that he has the prettiest mother in the world which makes her cry for joy. He now can play with his friends. then he tells other villagers of his good fortune with the doctor and many of them also visit the lion and areturn wearing glasses. there is joy and fun in the village.

One day Ms. Dennis tells them they are going to sing a song in the Winter concert, so they need to choose a song. When the children return, Avery brought a red, a blue, and a gold candle Avery's family celebrates Human Light, the candles represent, reason, compassion & hope. Jordan brings a Kinara his family celebrates Kwanzaa they light the candles to symbolize their community. Taylor brings a star from his Christmas tree. He explains that he celebrates Christmas and that the star is a reminder of the North Star the wise men followed to find Jesus. Mako brings a Bodi tree with lights. Mako's her family celebrates Bodi day, the day when the Buddha achieved enlightenment the lights on the tree represent the path to enlightenment. Alex brings a Menorah, Alex's family celebrates Hannukah, and the candles symbolize light's triumph over dark. River brings in a crown made of holly candles sticking out of it. her family celebrates Winter Solstice & the return of the sun. Ms. Dennis says all their celebrations revolve around light and the symbol of the Unitarian Universalist Church is a flaming chalice, each of the children have a light inside of them. River suggests they sing "This little light of mine" for the winter concert. Everyone agrees.
